Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) as being a popular low-watt, low power application in the fuel cell research has still some technical problems to overcome. High precious metal loading and insufficient conversion of fuel to energy are among major problems. So, improvements on these topics that would help commercialization of DMFCs, which means low cost and high efficient conversion, are very important. Identification of the place and nature of reactions taking place over the active surface area will provide us very important information and infrastructure for these improvements. The current density is the direct consequence of these reactions and measurement of its distribution will lead to the reaction kinetics and distribution. This thesis is focused on some techniques that will be applied for measuring the current density distribution over the fuel cell. It also includes applying of a new technique by the help of the other techniques. In order to understand the effect of the different operating parameters on the performance of the fuel cell and all the system, the current density distribution has been analyzed. For this purpose, a single cell and a measuring unit will be employed. The measuring unit consists of a segmented plate, and copper wires that are used as resistors. To calculate the local current densities, the potential differences of each resistor have been measured and then these values have been used to get the current distribution in the operating fuel cell.
