The world supplies most of its energy needs from fossil fuels and hydraulic resources. However, the depletion of these sources has led the world to seek alternative energy sources. Geothermal energy is an important source of renewable energy as an alternative to fossil fuels. The most serious environmental impact encountered in geothermal energy is the contamination of surface or groundwater. There is a need to develop new technologies in order to eliminate serious environmental effects of pollutants in geothermal waters. The aim of this study is the removal of boron to acceptable limit values by membrane distillation (MD) process with utilizing the waste heat released from geothermal power plants and the heat of the discharged hot geothermal water, and the recovery of geothermal water as an irrigation water. With this thesis, the thermal energy consumption, which is a restrictive parameter of the MD process, is reduced to minimum levels. Firstly, operating parameters of the air gap membrane distillation (HBMD) system was optimized for many commercial hydrophobic membranes. A minimum of %99.5 boron removal efficiency was achieved for all commercial membranes. Also, nanofiber membranes were fabricated by electrospinning method. The permeate water was obtained in accordance with irrigation water standards. In addition, membrane fabrication was carried out by phase inversion method with the addition of various additives and tested in both HBMD and liquid gap membrane distillation (SGMD) systems. Finally, the specific thermal energy consumption was investigated for the full scale MD process under different operating conditions.
