This work focuses on remote manipulation and teleoperation of a humanoid robotic system. Humanoid robots are well suited to perform tasks on environments that are designed for humans when compared to robotic manipulators mounted on top of a moving platform. Especially when the robot has to work in an unstructured and/or dynamic environment as in the case of disaster response operations. In this thesis, we propose a real-time haptic teleoperation system, designed to operate a compact humanoid robot with multiple modes. On the operator side, the operator only uses a desktop personal computer and 5 DOF haptic device in the shape of the wand. The operator doesn't need to wear anything uncomfortable during operation. The simplicity of the system enables the operator to further impose his dexterity on the remote robotic system. The main component of the remote side of the system is a relatively small sized humanoid robot (Nao from Softbank Robotics). Although the humanoid remote robot has limited capabilities compared to an actual sized human, we were able to perform basic remote operations with ease such as walking and object manipulation. Depending on the active teleoperation mode and the state of the robot, the remote system sends force feedback signals to the host system which are then applied to the operator through the wand. The main contribution of our study compared to the current state of the art in the literature is providing a multimodal haptic teleoperating system for operating humanoid robots with ease.
