One of the most important power quality factors which determine the state of an electric network is magnitude and time scale of the Short Duration Voltage Variations (SDWs). SDWs. are regarded as having a voltage change with a time scale of half a cycle to a minute. In addition, they are categorized according to their duration and magnitude as; voltage sag, voltage swell, brief interruption and transients. It has been accepted that, faults or switching on/off large loads are the main cause of the SDWs. Therefore quantitative analysis of the SDWs is expected to provide valuable information for standard developers, power system operators and manufacturers. The study presented here is about the effects of neutral grounding methods of medium voltage networks on SDWs which are simulated by creating single line to ground faults in a 1 1 kV radial network. The effect of length of the line, fault location and source impedance are investigated in conjunction with neutral grounding methods. The simulations are carried out using ATP (Alternative Transient Program) version of EMTP (Electro Magnetic Transient Program) and results are compared with the analytical solutions which are based on symmetrical components theory. The results demonstrate that SDWs are heavily under influence of neutral grounding methods and above mentioned parameters.
