As the digitalization of daily life increases, it causes a growing demand for electronic devices. Accelerating the design process of integrated circuits is essential to meeting the growing demand for rapid and efficient electronic system development. Inherent difficulties with IC (Integrated circuit) design makes meeting the demand more difficult especially on analog domain. Advancements in automation and novel fabrication methods have contributed to the emergence of fabless design, leading to enhanced accessibility and widespread adoption of integrated circuit (IC) development. However, with the acceleration of design processes and the growing digitalization of systems, malicious activities such as intellectual property (IP) theft have also increased. Furthermore, reverse engineering has become an increasingly frequent practice. Although the act is not inherently illegal, it can still result in significant violations of IP rights and contribute to the emergence of counterfeit ICs. Threats against IPs create major problems for IP holders, especially financial losses but are not limited to that. Counterfeit devices pose serious risks, including potential threats to consumer health, breaches of national security, and other significant consequences. Security-aware design remains a challenging task, often requiring substantial manual effort and specialized expertise. This challenge is particularly evident in the analog domain, where security considerations are still underdeveloped and remain in a relatively immature state. Significant advances have been made in the area of digital circuits in the effort to thwart IP piracy, to detect/prevent insertion of hardware Trojans and to protect against reverse engineering. However, analog design has not kept pace. Fundamental differences between digital and analog circuits make digital solutions less applicable in analog domain. Most of the digital devices depend on analog subblocks. Given that most of the counterfeit devices are analog based, securing analog design should be mandatory aspect for hardware security. The present study investigates common automation techniques, major security threats against ICs, and widely used defenses. This study also proposes a security automation approach that bridges analog design automation and hardware security, providing a foundational step toward enabling security automation in analog design. The proposed approach is then applied and assessed on key analog circuits to validate the method, though the approach is not limited to these specific circuits. The goal is to propose a strong security automation approach to mitigate reverse engineering and IC piracy. The utilized locking mechanisms help designers protect the rights of IP owners by obfuscating the sizes of transistors. Leveraging the power of automation, the implementation of locking mechanisms becomes more accessible and practical for circuit designers. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first implementation of security-aware optimization. This approach has the potential to enhance the security of analog circuits and protect intellectual property.
