In this thesis, microheater-based metal oxide gas sensors were developed for the detection of chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs). Magnetron sputtering and hydrothermal synthesis methods were employed for the fabrication of the sensing layers. Nanostructures based on tungsten trioxide (WO3), titanium dioxide (TiO2), vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), and zinc oxide (ZnO) were successfully obtained on microheater platforms in both thin film and nanostructured forms. In particular, Metal oxides were used both in their pure form and modified with a thin metal layer deposited by sputtering. The metal decoration aimed to enhance the sensor's selectivity towards specific target gases, and gas sensing tests were conducted on both the pristine and metal-coated metal oxide nanostructures. The microheater structures were fabricated using platinum (Pt) as the heater material, allowing precise temperature to control up to 800 ? with low power consumption. Metal oxide sensors were characterized using morphological, structural, and electrical analysis techniques to investigate their properties and performance. Within the scope of the thesis, gases identified according to the NATO AEP-54 standard were generated using a controlled test system, and the performance of the sensors was evaluated accordingly. Test gases are hazardous chemicals such as dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) as a sarin gas simulant, trimethyl phosphate (TMP) as a VX simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) as a mustard gas simulant, dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPGME) as a mustard gas derivative simulant, methyl salicylate (MeS) as a sulfur mustard simulant, as well as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as toxic industrial gases. The results demonstrated that metal oxide-based gas sensors exhibited improved selectivity and sensitivity for specific gases. Consequently, low-power, microheater-integrated metal oxide sensor systems with selective detection capabilities were successfully developed, demonstrating significant potential for chemical warfare treat detection applications.
