In the evolving landscape of information security, the escalating sophistication of attack techniques has underscored the paramount importance of hardware security. This thesis proposes a cost-effective decapsulation method and automation software to minimise operator dependency, with the aim of implementing laser fault injection (LFI) attacks more effectively and economically. The hybrid decapsulation method combines mechanical milling and chemical etching to expose the surface of integrated circuits without causing any damage to them. The validity of this approach was demonstrated through experimental trials conducted on ATmega328P microcontroller chips, which revealed that decapsulation can be accomplished without compromising the chip's functionality. Following the decapsulation process, a series of successful LFI attacks were executed, resulting in the modification of the encrypted output by means of a laser fault injection technique during the chip's execution of the AES encryption algorithm. In these attacks, laser pulses were directed to sensitive areas on the chip, resulting in incorrect encrypted data output. Target areas for laser injection were identified, and it was found that these were suitable. Furthermore, operator errors were reduced by automating the laser triggering, data analysis and evaluation of the attack results with software that automates the process. The methods developed within the scope of the study are not limited to experimental verifications, but provide a cost-effective, repeatable and reliable approach that can be used in microelectronic security tests. The results obtained provide new generation solutions that will increase the effectiveness of LFI attacks, especially in evaluating the security of embedded systems used in cryptographic applications. In this respect, the present thesis contributes to the academic literature and provides practical solutions for industrial applications.
