This thesis emphasizes the importance of the liquefaction process in the utilization of hydrogen as an energy carrier. Liquefaction is a critical step for the storage and transportation of hydrogen, and it forms the core focus of this study. The research investigates in detail pre-cooled Joule-Thomson hydrogen liquefaction cycles using different single-component refrigerants. To effectively liquefy hydrogen and improve the cycle performance, various cascade Joule-Thomson cycles are proposed, and one-dimensional thermodynamic analyses are performed for these cycles. The thermophysical properties of the fluids used in the analysis are sourced from the NIST REFPROP database and incorporated into the calculations. The technical and economic challenges faced by commonly used liquefaction cycles in industry are comprehensively addressed and analyzed. The cascade Joule-Thomson liquefaction cycle stands out compared to alternative methods due to its advantages, such as high reliability, ease of scalability, and the lack of need for an expansion machine. In this context, the performance of two different pre-cooled hydrogen liquefaction cycles, optimized using process simulation by Chang and Park [12] in the literature, was calculated with the one-dimensional numerical solution model developed in this thesis, and the accuracy of the model was validated. The results obtained confirm the performance of the respective cycles and validate the optimization efforts. The thermodynamic performance of the cycles designed in this study is evaluated in terms of key performance indicators, such as the figure of merit (FOM), exergy efficiency, and specific energy consumption; the data obtained are compared with those of existing alternative cycles. The performance of the proposed cascade Joule-Thomson hydrogen liquefaction cycles was analyzed using the real thermodynamic and physical properties of the fluids, obtained from the NIST REFPROP database. Additionally, the pressure levels of all stages were optimized using an algorithm developed within this thesis. In this regard, four and two pre-cooling stage, multi-compression level, inter-stage cooled cascade Joule-Thomson hydrogen liquefaction cycles were designed, and the optimum operating parameters and thermodynamic performance indicators for these cycles were presented in detail In conclusion, the optimum operating parameters and performance indicators for the proposed cascade Joule-Thomson hydrogen liquefaction cycles, which utilize single-component refrigerants and have a production capacity of 86.4 tons per day, were determined. These cycles feature two and four pre-cooling stages, multi-stage inter-cooling compression, and expansion through multiple Joule-Thomson valves. In the cascade Joule-Thomson hydrogen liquefaction cycles developed in this thesis, the figure of merit (FOM) and exergy efficiency were maximized, and specific energy consumption was minimized through multi-pressure stage inter-cooling compression and expansion via multiple Joule-Thomson valves. As a result, this work makes significant contributions to both academic literature and industrial applications.
