Depression is a common psychological disorder as old as human history, with a high risk of recurrence and increased severity. Depression, which is one of the oldest psychological disorders known from the beginning of human history to the present, causes people's social functionality to decrease and as a result, they experience serious negative effects in their business and private life. Working long hours causes fatigue in the individual. This fatigue can turn into negative emotions related to work and these emotions can turn into depression. There are no studies on working hours and depression in elderly individuals in the United States. A longitudinal follow-up study will provide definitive conclusions about causality. In this study, the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) dataset, which includes individuals over the age of fifty in the United States, started in 1992 and is collected every two years, is used. For econometric analysis, 14 HRS waves were examined from 1992 to 2018. Continuous variables of working hours were formed in the analysis made with a sample of 129,495 individual- years. Analysis was done with Cox Regression method. As a result of the econometric analyzes, it was found that the increase in the working hours of the individuals decreased the probability of depression and these results were statistically significant.
