Waves dissipate most of their energy as they break, transforming it into heat and turbulence. This energy is crucial for sediment transport, beach profile and the design of coastal structures. Nonetheless, wave breaking calculations are mostly based on empirical formulas. There is limited knowledge concerning the mechanism of wave breaking and is still not fully understood. However, thanks to various numerical models, these processes can be simulated. Various wave models to calculate wave breaking energy were developed in the past. One of the leading wave models is Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN). This study examined the parameters in the wave breaking process using SWAN models. Datasets of a field experiment in Duck Beach, North Carolina which is named DUCK94 are used to calibrate and evaluate the models. These datasets occur bottom profiles, tidal surges, and spectrums of waves. In this study different types of breaking process implemented in the runs including constant breaker index and the variable breaker index. The optimum values of the coefficients in the wave breaking parameters were determined and evaluated. This study also covers the effect of triad wave-wave interaction and bottom friction in the calibrated models. As a result of running SWAN models, two different types of models with different values of the coefficient are proposed. Models with a variable breaker index and models that calculate the dispersion of breaking waves with a constant breaker index are compared. The performances of the models in deep and shallow water conditions were evaluated separately.
