This thesis investigates the development of innovative electrolyte materials for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) through the Cold Sintering Process (CSP). The study aims to address challenges associated with conventional fabrication methods, such as low densification, sodium carbonate decomposition, and grain coarsening, by focusing on ceria-based nanocomposite electrolytes containing varying amounts of Na?CO?. The CSP technique, which operates at low temperatures, aims to achieve high densification while preserving the nanoscale structure that is critical for ionic conductivity. The densification of samarium-doped ceria (SDC)-Na?CO? nanocomposites via CSP is presented in detail. Experimental results demonstrate that the CSP method achieves relative densities of ?97 % at temperatures below 200 °C, significantly outperforming conventional sintering techniques. The effects of carbonate content and different transient solvents (deionized water and ethylene glycol) on microstructural and electrical properties were systematically investigated. It was found that both the humidification method and carbonate concentration play a critical role in determining the densification and conductivity. Electrolytes with 20 %wt. carbonate content tested in a cathode/electrolyte/cathode half-cell configuration exhibited ionic conductivity of 68 mS/cm at 600 °C. Under a reducing atmosphere (H?), this value further increased to 0.13 S/cm. Furthermore, single-step fabrication of full SOFC cells integrating the anode, electrolyte, and cathode layers via CSP was successfully achieved. Full-cell tests demonstrated a power density of 534 mW/cm². The study also explored the hypothesized superionic conduction pathway at the ceramic-carbonate interface. However, no direct experimental evidence of this superionic pathway could be obtained, indicating that further investigation is required.
