Exchange Bias (EB) effect is an effect that is observed at the interface of a ferromagnetic (FM) material and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) material. This effect was first observed by Meiklejohn and Bean in 1956 as a result of surface oxidation of Co particles. Although a number of models were proposed about the origin of EB effect, none of these models is able to completely explain the origin of this effect. Despite origin is unknown, it has been widely used in technological applications. This thesis study was conducted in order to investigate EB effect on thin films consist of ferromagneic PtCo and antiferromagnetic CoO layers and to determine which composition maximizes EB field. Samples were prepared as 100 Å PtxCo1-x (x: between 0.1 and 0.9 with 0.1 steps) / 100 Å CoO on Si (001) crystal orientation substrate by magnetron sputtering deposition technique in ultra high vacuum conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique was used to determine PtxCo1-x layers chemical ratio. Magnetic characterization of the sample was carried out using magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) technique and angle resolved hysteresis curves were acquired for each sample. Moreover, magnetization orientations depending on applied field were determined. EB fields and blocking temperatures were obtained using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) on easy axes that are found considering magnetization orientation. Besides, magnetic anisotropy information was gained using MOKE technique for each sample.
