Sodium-chalcogen batteries, particularly sodium-sulfur batteries, have attracted considerable interest due to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the commercial application of these batteries is severely hindered by the accompanying challenges. Selenium (Se), another chalcogen member, has been regarded as one of the most promising next generation cathode materials for sodium-based batteries due to its high electronic conductivity (1×10–3 S·m–1) and density (4.82 g·cm?3). However, Se cathodes face two major challenges: i) the large volume expansion during discharge (up to 336%) and ii) the low electronic conductivity of the final product, sodium selenide (Na2Se), along with its high oxidation activation energy requirement. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel approaches that can effectively address these challenges in a cost-effective manner. The main objective of this thesis is to develop innovative and cost-effective strategies to enhance the performance of Na-Se batteries by mitigating volume expansion and reducing the activation energy for Na2Se oxidation. Furthermore, this research aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms associated with these improvements. Notably, this study introduces two novel approaches that have not been previously reported in the literature: 1) the addition of a small amount of electrocatalyst to regulate Na2Se formation/precipitation and lower its activation energy, and 2) the development of a new type of biopolymer binder to address volume changes during discharge. The obtained results in this work offer valuable insights and propose new research avenues for advancing the fundamental understanding and development of Na-Se battery technologies. These findings contribute to broader knowledge in this field and will hopefully guide future investigations in improving Na-Se battery's performance and addressing associated challenges.
