In aircraft and gas turbine engines, the icing phenomenon has posed a significant safety and performance challenge since the early days of aviation. Ice accretion on engine inlet surfaces throughout the flight envelope is a critical issue, particularly in icing prone zones. These zones are typically defined by ambient air temperatures below 0 °C combined with visible moisture, such as when flying through clouds. In such conditions, accumulated ice can lead to Foreign Object Damage (FOD) by breaking off and entering the engine core. Even if the ice remains attached to the surface, it can still narrow the flow path, disrupt inlet aerodynamics, and distort the uniformity of the incoming airflow profile required for optimal engine performance. In turboshaft engines, Inlet Particle Separator (IPS) structures are designed to prevent unwanted particles such as sand or dust from entering the engine. However, due to the same aerodynamic characteristics that enable them to separate heavy particles from the flow, these structures can also promote the collection of supercooled water droplets, making them highly susceptible to rapid ice accretion. To ensure uninterrupted engine operation, an anti-icing system must be integrated into the IPS design. Developing such a system requires a multidisciplinary approach. This includes accurate aerodynamic modelling of the IPS, followed by droplet impingement and collection analyses—typically carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools or experimental methods. These results are used as inputs in thermal models to estimate the heating requirements that would keep the IPS surfaces ice-free. In this study, an anti-icing system was designed for the outer dome region of an existing IPS module in compliance with certification requirements. The design was then tested in an icing wind tunnel, and the numerical results were compared with the experimental data. The tunnel tests demonstrated that the thermal modelling was able to accurately predict the most critical test points in terms of icing risk.
