Investors investing in financial assets want to maximize profits by minimizing risks. For this, many methods have been developed to measure the performance of assets and to prevent possible losses. The most widely used method to reduce risk is diversification. In 1952, Markowitz obtained the analytical formula for portfolio weights that minimized portfolio variance. In this formula, the covariance matrix is unknown and estimated from historical data. However, large estimation errors are made when estimating the covariance matrix with historical data. In order to reduce the margin of error in the estimation, it is necessary to increase the sample size, but the dynamic structures of the financial markets do not allow this. In this study, firstly, a comparison was made over the probability densities of the risks in the evaluation of the methods with simulation. Secondly, the methods were tested with BIST30 data and their performances were compared. According to the simulation results, Ledoit-Wolf, glasso and RMT reduce the real risk in portfolios by improving the estimation of the inverse of the covariance matrix. According to the real data results, while using the equal weight method in the portfolios consisting of the shares of the companies in the same sector gives the lowest risk, lower risks can be obtained by using the Ledoit-Wolf, RMT and glasso methods in the portfolios of the shares in different sectors. Although there are slight differences depending on the number of assets and the window spacing, glasso stands out as the best method overall.
