Özet
This thesis presents a novel design for a low frequency underwater electro-acoustic projector element based on the Class V Flextensional transducer. Although Class V Flextensional transducers are typically used in medium and high frequency ultrasonic and medical applications, they have not been adapted for low frequency underwater acoustic applications (f < 10 kHz) due to manufacturing and assembly challenges. To address this need, smaller piezoelectric components compared to traditional Class V Flextensional transducers are utilized, and a segmented octagonal stack assembly structure along with a complementary cap design is developed. The design, modeling, simulations, prototyping, and characterization activities for the segmented Class V Flextensional transducer element are carried out. Simulations are conducted using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method in OnScale software, and the produced prototype is characterized in the open test tank of TÜBİTAK MAM Underwater Acoustic Laboratory. A strong agreement is observed between the simulation data and measurement results in the frequency range of 1 kHz to 11 kHz. For frequencies below 1 kHz, a new technique for free-field calibration of underwater acoustic transducer elements is introduced into the literature by applying the Two Equations - Two Unknowns (2E-2U) method. This lightweight and dimensionally compact transducer design, relative to its operating frequency, can be used to meet the low-frequency projector needs of stationary and mobile underwater platforms. For beam steering and higher sound pressure levels, planar array structures with N x N or M x N elements can be created using this design. This thesis comprehensively examines the process from concept design to the characterization of the final product and details its unique features.
