Combustion chamber deposits cause numerous undesirable negative effects on gas engine performance. In the thesis study, it was aimed to determine the major and minor elements in the deposits that cause this negativity on the combustion chamber surface of the gas engine, to examine the morphology of the deposit surfaces, to establish the oxidation chemistry of the compounds responsible for deposit formation and to investigate the deposit formation mechanism. In this respect, deposit characterization was performed using multiple analysis techniques including SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF and XRD methods. According to the morphological analysis of the deposits, the bottom surface was more smooth, while the top surface was more irregular and wavy due to the accumulation of particles of different sizes and shapes. A total of 25 elements were detected in the deposit by SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and XRF Spectrometer analysis. Oxygen, the amount of which was determined by SEM-EDS and XRF methods, constituted approximately half of the deposit by weight. The weight ratios of Si, S, Ca, Sb and Sn in the deposit were above 1%, verified by all elemental analysis techniques. According to the EDS analysis, the elements detected on the bottom, top and cross-section surfaces of the deposits have different weight ratios. The majority of the deposits belonging to Odayeri and Kömürcüoda Energy Generation Facilities consist of oxides of Si, S and Ca, however, the deposit belonging to Dilovası Energy Generation Facility consists of oxides of Si and Sb. It was determined by the XRD method that the crystalline compounds (CaSO4, SiO2) formed the major elements in the deposits. The oxidation chemistry of the compounds responsible for the formation of the major elements was revealed. The metal oxide particles formed by the oxidation of these compounds in the combustion chamber reach the combustion chamber surfaces and accumulate there through inertial transport including impaction and sticking, Eddy impaction, thermophoresis and direct alkali condensation mechanisms.
