This thesis work addresses the coating of impact manifolds in high-pressure turbines of aircraft engines using the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) method and the metallographic examination of these coatings. The primary aim of the research is to optimize the performance of coatings obtained by the APS method and to analyze in detail the effects of the parameters involved in the coating process. In the study, a coating was applied on AMS5510 stainless steel substrate material using a plasma powder with the commercial code Metco 51F-NS, which has a CuAl chemical composition. During the coating process, six different parameters, including current, gas flow rates (argon and hydrogen), spray distance, and feed rate, were considered. The resulting coatings were prepared for detailed examination by undergoing processes such as cutting, cold mounting, grinding, and polishing in a metallographic laboratory, and were then examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the chemical and morphological properties of the coatings were evaluated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. In the study, the effects of the determined parameters on the coating quality were analyzed using experimental design methods. In this context, new parameter sets were created using the Taguchi method, and as a result of experiments conducted with these parameters, it was found that samples with a high and homogeneous distribution of Cu were metallographically successful. The analyses obtained demonstrated that coating by the APS method plays a critical role in enhancing the surface durability and wear resistance of materials used in gas turbine jet engines. This research aims to improve the performance and surface engineering applications of gas turbine jet engines by optimizing the efficiency of coatings obtained through the APS method. The results of the study provide significant information for the development and expansion of thermal spray coatings in the aerospace industry. Thus, optimizing the coating process with the APS method provides innovative solutions for surface engineering and advanced material applications, offering valuable contributions to the sector.
