In this study, the fabrication and optimization of piezoelectric composites with a 1-3-2 connectivity notation, capable of functioning as both sensors and projectors in sonar systems, have been carried out. The composite structures were designed in ring and disc forms and configured to fit concentrically. PZT-5A ceramic was selected for the sensing element, while PZT-4 was used for the projectors element. Acoustic and electrical performances of the samples were compared using various ring and disc dimensions. The samples were shaped using a mechanical pressing method, followed by sintering and surface grinding processes. Subsequently, electrodes were applied, and the samples were polarized. The 1-3-2 connectivity structure was then formed through precision dicing. To prevent interference between the sensing and actuating elements, each was mounted on a ceramic base that also served to reduce acoustic noise and back reflections. Finally, the composite structure was completed with a polyurethane coating. The resulting design holds promising potential for dual-function piezoelectric sensor applications in sonar systems.
