The sales revenue of the car industry reached a peak level of about 3 trillion US$ in 2019 with almost 75 million cars produced worldwide. Even though a decline was observed as the result of the Covid-19 epidemic it still reached a turnover of 2.95 trillion US$ with about 66 million cars produced in 2022. It still remained one of the most important industrial branches with a huge impact on other industrial branches like steel and glass industry and their suppliers. The global demand for glass enamels for the automotive glass industry is about 1500 to 2000 Mt/a which does not even consider the need of the replacement market. Continuous effort is put into the improvement of safety and the technical performance of all parts of a car. Recently, carbon-based nanomaterials like nanotubes and graphene have found widespread applications in electronics and coating industry. In the present study it was investigated how graphene, graphite and other carbon-based materials interact with the bismuth-based glass frit used in a glass enamel for automotive windshields at various stages of the production process. Modified glass enamels were prepared and tested under conditions typical for automotive applications.
