The high demand for tomatoes can be attributed to two primary factors: their nutritional value and their extensive utilization within various industries, particularly the food industry, where they are employed in products such as sauces, ketchup, and tomato paste. The increasing global population has the potential to create a significant challenge in satisfying the world's food demands. To overcome this challenge and to achieve high yields, chemical fertilizers have been used extensively for many years. However, the excessive use of chemical fertilizers has been shown to lead to a number of environmental concerns, including the degradation of soil structure, the pollution of water resources, the loss of biodiversity, and the overall threat to environmental sustainability. Sustainable agriculture is based on conserving natural resources while maintaining production without harming the environment. In this context, integrating environmentally friendly practices into agricultural systems is crucial. Practices that minimize environmental impact while maintaining productivity are crucial in agriculture. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in sustainable agriculture and investigate microbial fertilizers as a biological alternative. In this context, a microbial consortium was established with bacteria (Pseudomonas sp., Acinetobacter sp., and Enterobacter sp.) isolated within the framework of a previous TUBITAK project (121O649). This consortium possesses the capacity to fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphate, form biofilms, and produce siderophores that support plant growth. The consortium was then applied to tomato plants by method of foliar spraying. The present study was conducted on three distinct substrates frequently utilized in soilless agriculture: cocopeat, perlite, and slag in Darıca District Governorship Soilless Agriculture R&D Greenhouse. The spraying process was executed on two separate occasions during the flowering stage of tomato cultivation, and the impact of the microbial consortium was subjected to comparative analysis. The tomato plant was selected as a model organism for its economic value and its extensive use in experimental studies. The research is predicated on the hypothesis that microbial fertilizers will have a positive effect on tomato growth; however, the degree of this effect may vary depending on the characteristics of the growing medium. In this study, the contributions of the foliar application of microbial fertilizer to plant height, pH, chlorophyll content, and tomato growth were observed. This study is expected to provide novel insights into the interaction of a unique microbial fertilizer consortium with diverse soilless agriculture substrates, particularly in the context of tomato cultivation. The findings are anticipated to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
